Verbal Irony: the opposite of  what is meant is spoken.

Dramatic Irony: the readers or listeners know of something prior to the characters knowing.

 Verbal Irony:
After the burial
we returned to our units
and assumed our poses.
Our posture was the new posture
and not the old sick posture.
When we left our stations
it was just to prove we could,
not a serious departure
or a search for yet another

It is written that they departed, however they do not leave. This poem is confusing and it is difficult to understand what is being said. This devices was also challenging to find. Terms, such as these (irony), are more commonly used in novels and short stories not poems and songs.

Dramatic Irony:
Don't you know I love you more than life itself,
Don't you know that you're my pride
And I would not have you walking through this world.
Without me by your side

Go to sleep my little man
Don't you weep my little man

I'd like to keep you with me all your life,
But I know I can't do that
So I must try to teach you wrong from right,
To keep the vulture from your back

Go to sleep my little man
Don't you weep my little man

And when you're dreaming you can talk to angels,
So wipe the tears from your eyes
And if there's demons that try to steal you breath away.
You can't believe that, know my spirit will be standing by your side

(Ozzy Osborne, Cd Cover)

Through the words of his song Ozzy is trying to explain to his son, Jack Osborne, how much he loves him. Jack does not yet understand how deep his father's love for him is yet for he was just born. Ozzy explains how he would do anything for his son and asks if he knows how much he loves him. Dramatic irony is more commonly found in novels and short stories as is verbal irony.

Situational Irony:
I don't wanna fall in love
But it's been taken out of my hands
And right now I realize
I don't wanna say goodbye

I miss you more than words can say
They never turn out right
But here goes anyway

Everyday I miss your touch
Never thought it would mean so much
All the words I could have said
Got me reelin' torn to shreds
Every road I go is nowhere
But I know you're out there somewhere
These voices in my head
Got me feelin' torn to shreds

I can't help the way I feel
But somethin's got a hold of my heart
It hurts that I can't let go
Now I just wanna let you know

(Def Leppard, www.lyrics.com)

In this song the man did not want to fall in love and thought it would never happen, however he was wrong. This is situational irony and it happens to people everyday and is used well by numberous mystery type authors that mislead you into thinking something quite different then the end result. This is effective and is an excellent device to used when wishing to get the reader involved in the song, story or poem.
