There is an evening coming in
Across the fields, one never seen before,
That lights no lamps.

Silken it seems at a distance, yet
When it is drawn up over the knees and breast
It brings no comfort.

Where has the tree gone, that locked

(Philip Larkin, www.americanpoems.com)

The evening that is spoken of in this poem is in fact a tornado sweaping across the country side. Symbolism is one of the most commoly used of all these devices in poems, songs, novels , short stories, ect. It is the most efficeint way of describing something with depth and color. Symbolism may give you the feel, emotion, taste, touch and sound of the object, ect. This is an extremely powerful device.
