Peril as a Possesssion 'Tis Good to hear Danger disintegrates Satiety There's Basis there -- Begets an awe That searches Human Nature's creases As clean as Fire.

The poet compares peril to possession which do not relate at the surface. However if you dig deep you might find that when you are in danger those who put you their are in control. In grave peril a person may possess your life and may hold it by a thin thread. Similes are less common than metaphors (I find) in poetry and lyrics.
